I took a quick trip to the grocery this a.m. to get some ingredients for carrot cake (with nuts! can you believe this is me??). I was careful to get all the ingredients I needed so that I wouldn't have to make a mad dash to the store later on to get some ingredient I didn't have on hand.
So this afternoon as I made the mad dash to the store to get the one ingredient I'd forgotten this a.m., I saw a man. He was older, maybe late 60s, with very thin arms and legs. The reason I knew he had thin arms and legs is because he was only wearing what looked like some cut off khakis, rolled up... short...very short, actually. They reminded me of the length (if I should even call it a length) of Trey's tennis shorts from 1974. So, this man, bronzed by the sun, had on the top at least of some nice khakis and a nice-looking, dark leather belt. He seemed quite comfortable.
Then I thought about how hot and humid it's going to be this summer. And I just remembered that I get to spend July in California where the climate is so temperate they don't even install air-conditioners in the dorm rooms. And thinking of dorm rooms made me think about the fact that I'll be sharing a dorm room with two other strangers (I hope they put me with girls--it is California, after all!) for a whole month. I think Trey's right. This trip will change me.

I get the carrot cake part of your title, but suspenders.... Do you feel suspended over a new experience that you're about to be dropped into? I'll bet that you find you like it as much as you now like nuts and mushrooms. By the way, how did that end up as the title of your previous blog?
Dearest Mommy,
I hope you weren't expecting something deep and profound. I thought "Carrot cake and suspenders" sounded nice. They guy was actually wearing a belt, not suspenders, but "Carrot cake and a belt" just didn't sound the same.
I titled my previous post based upon what I was thinking at the time I began writing the post. Completely arbitrary.
love you!
Regardless...I like how I tied it in. But I liked what you said, too. And, I agree, suspenders sounds better.
hello momma. well, hil, as you probably know i seem to be allergic to carrots. in other news, daniel is watching some sort of japanese cartoon that makes absolutely no sense.
I love Daniel's Japanese cartoons. They are wonderfully nonsensical, aren't they?
Be on the lookout for suspenders in Japanese cartoons. :-}
his cartoons make sense to me and so does carrot cake. is this a bad sign?
it's a sign of intelligence.
bad is relative.
You should listen to Led Zepplin's "Going to California" on repeat the whole time on the flight. Because it is doubtless going to be an accurate description of your experience.
Traveling is fun, particularly when it is a place where you don't know anyone, and you get to meet the types of people that otherwise you wouldn't.
Where in California is this event?
It's at Stanford, which is somewhere between San Jose and San Francisco.
It will be interesting to be among strangers in a strange place with no means of transportation other than my feet. Hopefully I'll be able to keep my blog up.
Get a bike!
I've existed for a long time now without a car, and don't really care to get one.
