Through my church I am taking Dave Ramsey's Financial Peach University. Supposedly if I attend 12 of 13 classes, I graduate! I've always wanted another degree, so I guess I certificate won't be that bad.
Ramsey hates credit cards, which I have started calling ruin-my-life-debt cards. I decided to pay mine off and cancel them. It's funny, but I get the distinct impression that my credit card doesn't want to be canceled. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that there is absolutely no information regarding cancellation on the website, and when you call the 800 number, you have to go through 10+ button options to get to something that sounds like it might have something to do with closing the account. Then you are put on hold for the standard 20--30 minutes. tick. tock. tick. tock. tick. tock.
. . . wait . . . I've gotten through . . .
Hm. That was easier than closing my free AOL account back when I first got my computer.
Yay!

i have never owned a credit card . . . but ive borrowed a small amount from the US gov fer school
I should have been more careful to follow your example, bro. There's wisdom in that decision--I mean the not-owning-a-credit-card one. The other I can't comment on.
I want a financial peach!
Hm. Well, Caroline, those can be purchased for $90 apiece from Dave. They're pretty expensive peaches, if you ask me, but this one has already changed my life!
So The Presidents of the United States of America were wrong... Millions of peaches don't come free.
Judging from what I know of Dave, I think your peach is a good investment and will pay itself off.
dear hil: well, credit's not all bad cause according to family legend . . . grandpa is the same way i am and he couldnt get a loan sometime back cause he had no credit cause he'd never had a credit card.
p.s. dave ramsey says that debt for education is basically the ONLY justifiable debt . . . however, i know several students w/ six-figure education debts who would like to debate him on this issue
And a house. That's the other justifiable debt.
everything is easier than cancelling a free AOL account.
I think backpacking Europe is justifiable debt. At least I did in 2004. Now I'm kicking myself.
:-] You are so wise.
I'm just trying to give you lots of comments. And compliments.
Credit cards are good for ordering things online or over the phone! Also for reimbursable expenses and emergencies. We kept a super high credit limit card when our boys were over in Europe and Africa in case of an emergency and we had to have them air evacuated or something. We thankfully never used it, and have now canceled it, but it was good to have that backup available if needed. I think there is a place for credit cards just not in your wallet. djdmmom
