whew

That black background was oppressive.

I cooked Austin Soup, corn bread, and Banana Bread last night. I felt very accomplished, and even though I cleaned lots of dishes while the food was cooking, there were still a ton of dishes left after we ate. I'm not sure how that happens. Anyway, I think they're still in the sink.

The soup and corn bread came out very nicely. The B Bread needs some work. Banana Bread Pudding?

We have a fireplace at our little apt., and fortunately, Trey enjoys building fires. We didn't have any tools for the fireplace, though, so we had been using some old bamboo tongs that we didn't need in the kitchen. These had served us well, until last night. Last night, the tongs caught fire in the line of duty and Trey sent them on to their inevitable fate.

I am having a chocolate craving. eep!

Lyd, I have to tell you (if I haven't already) that the bamboo tongs in the set you gave us have suffered an irreversible tragedy in the line of duty. You will be happy to know that Tongs was indeed meeting a need and was of great service to us in his particular calling. The surviving family, while mourning the loss of Tongs, continue to work hard and diligently in the kitchen with the other common utensils.

You should also know that Tongs was fully aware of the danger involved in his special calling and took on the challenge with zeal, assuring us that he did not fear his fate, whatever it would be.

He was the bravest set of tongs I've ever known, and we miss him.

N8 needs to know about these tongs. I think a lawyer should review the case immediately.

"some old bamboo tongs that we didn't need in the kitchen" ... is there also "some old knife set that we didn't need in the kitchen"???

perhaps there was a case of mistaken identity and the tongs had a twin? really n8 -the possibilities are endless ;-)

also. what's austin soup? can you give me the recipe for christmas? :-]

my goel is to one day find the ultimate wedding present - a present so suiting for re-gifting that it will end up traveling the world - sort of like the giving tree book.

i have no idea what i'm saying.
the end.

Sarah Jo,

I think you can vary the superfluous ingredients to your preferences, but the main ingredients for Christmas are the birth of a Savior and some people to celebrate it. You can throw in things like a Christmas tree and gifts and fruit cake as you see fit.

why did i never have "austin soup" while living with your grandparents?

I think Grandma discovered it after your departure. I should put the recipe up--it's simple and quite tasty.

As I recall:

4 chicken breasts, cooked and cubed
2 cans black beans
2 cans mexican corn
1 can chicken broth
2 cups salsa (thick and chunky is best)

Simmer all for about 30 minutes. Serve with your choice of condiments (suggestions: sour cream, grated cheddar, corn chips (Trey and I had corn bread, obviously), guacamole, etc.).

I think that's all that was in it.

I'm not sure which is my favorite:

the fact that you used a kitchen utensil for fireplace use

OR

that you used a WOODEN utensil for fireplace use.

i can't stop laughing.
